INTRODUCTION TO PHONETICS

Course Content
Module 1 (10 Hrs.)
Overview of Phonetics:
– Introduction to phonetics as the study of speech sounds and their production, transmission, and reception.- Explanation of the importance of phonetics in understanding language, pronunciation, and speech disorders.
Module 2 (6 Hrs.)
Articulatory Phonetics
-Understanding the human vocal tract and the organs involved in speech production. – Explanation of phonetic features such as voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. – Illustration of how speech sounds are produced through airflow, vibration, and articulatory gestures.
Module 3 (5 Hrs.)
Phonetic Transcription
– Introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its symbols for representing speech sounds. – Practice in phonetic transcription of words and phrases from various languages. – Discussion on the importance of accurate transcription for linguistic analysis and language learning.
Module 4 (5 Hrs.)
Acoustic Phonetics
– Explanation of how speech sounds are represented acoustically through frequency, amplitude, and duration. – Introduction to spectrograms and other tools used in acoustic analysis of speech. – Exploration of acoustic properties that distinguish different speech sounds.
Module 5 (10 Hrs.)
Auditory Phonetics
– Understanding the perception of speech sounds by the human auditory system. – Discussion on auditory processing and the identification of phonetic features. – Illustration of how listeners perceive speech sounds in different linguistic contexts.
